The pipe fitter, who has earned the reputation for powering the engines of industry that keep business thriving in America, is responsible for installing, maintaining, and servicing any system that involves air conditioning, heating chemicals, or refrigeration in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings. A pipe fitter also is involved with high-tech clean rooms in semi-conductor plants and in facilities that demand absolute purity in mechanical systems, such as pharmaceutical facilities. The union pipe fitter also trains to become a certified welder and expert valve repair person.

Local 533 for almost 100 years has been and will continue to be the backbone of the piping industry in K.C.

Working in partnership with the Mechanical Contractors Association of Kansas City and 100 plus signatory contractors LU 533 has provided the training, experience, work ethic, manpower, skills, and networking opportunities necessary to install, maintain, and service any and all HVAC and process piping involved in the industrial, commercial and residential arenas.

The Local strives to stay on the forefront of training. Its Apprenticeship and Journeyman Training Programs are state-of-the-art, insuring that the organized Pipe Fitter is the best qualified and the best trained service and construction Pipe Fitter on the job. Beyond attending a rigorous five-year classroom program, the Pipe Fitter Apprentices are trained in the field by skilled trades people and the contractors who employ them. The competition in today's market requires skilled workers to ensure a job is done on time and under budget the first time. It's not just about filling the position or obtaining the lowest bid anymore — it is about hiring an asset for the company.

With more than 1,500 members to draw from locally and over 300,000 nationally, no job is either too big or too small. The main stay of this membership is the training that all members receive. Local 533’s training facilities and instructors are second to none in opportunities and education.
