Resolving Conflict
Conflict is an inevitable part of life, but it doesn't have to be destructive. This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage and resolve conflicts in various professional settings. Through a combination of theoretical concepts and practical exercises, participants will gain insight into the nature of conflicts, understand different approaches to conflict resolution, and develop strategies for navigating challenging interpersonal dynamics.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the two basic types of conflict and the underlying reasons they occur.
- Recognize five typical approaches to conflict, including avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, and collaboration.
- Implement the basic steps of conflict resolution while managing their emotions effectively.
- Practice effective communication skills to minimize and prevent conflicts before they escalate.
- Employ strategies for responding to challenging individuals, such as dealing with extreme anger or addressing conflict avoidance.
- Handle specific conflict situations with confidence, including interactions with supervisors, clients, or other departments within an organization.

Loretta Summers has 40+ years of human resources experience in union and nonunion environments. Noted for her enthusiasm, passion and humor, Loretta combines energy and real-world experiences to facilitate personal and organizational change. She serves as adjunct faculty at Baker University, Ottawa University, Benedictine College and Johnson County Community College.
