Registration limited to 60 participants.
 
Join WiMI-KC for a hands-on, confidence-building seminar designed for women working in the mechanical industry who want to sharpen their home repair skills. Led by the skilled tradeswomen of Heartland Women in the Trades (HWIT), this 3-hour program gives attendees practical, guided experience with real tools, real systems, and real repair scenarios commonly found in homes.
 
We’ll kick off the morning together with a brief intro from HWIT and an essential safety overview. Then participants will rotate through four of six available skill-building stations. Each station is capped at 10 people to ensure personalized instruction and plenty of hands-on learning time.
 
Available Skill Stations
Participants may select four stations during registration.
 
HVAC Maintenance
Learn the most common home HVAC tasks to keep systems running smoothly:

• Changing air filters
• Lighting a pilot light
• Cleaning the outside unit
• Setting up and programming thermostats
• Spotting warning signs before problems become major

Drywall & Painting
Practice the basics of wall repair and finishing:

• Patching and spackling
• Sanding
• Painting techniques for a smooth finish

Plumbing
Gain hands-on experience with everyday plumbing issues:

• Removing a P-trap
• Fixing a leaky or running toilet
• Flushing a hot water heater
• Changing a toilet
• Identifying warning signs such as leaks or failing water heaters

Tile
Build confidence with tile installation and repair:

• Repairing grout
• Laying tile
• Caulking for clean, durable results

Electrical
Learn safe, practical electrical basics:

• Replacing an outlet
• Replacing a light switch
• Installing a light fixture or ceiling fan

Basics of Power Tools
Get comfortable with essential power tools through guided instruction:

• Drills
• Saws
• Additional common tools used in home repair

Target Audience: Women working in the mechanical industry 
 
Cost: There is no charge for employees of Contractors Signatory to Local 8 & 533.

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations for this MCAKC event must be received at least 2 Business Days prior to the event by email to learn@mcakc.org or by phone at 913-948-9200. Cancellations received after this time will be assessed a cancellation fee.

“No Shows”, except for emergencies, will be assessed a fee and invoiced $100 for this half day seminar.
